COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Textile Design program at the University of Southampton combines practical studio work with contextual, professional, and collaborative learning to develop students’ creative and technical abilities. Core modules focus on building a strong foundation in design principles, contextual practice, and professional attributes, helping students critically analyse their work within historical and contemporary frameworks while exploring entrepreneurial skills for self-promotion and employability. Creative Experimentation: Pre-collection encourages risk-taking and individual design identity development, preparing students for the Final Major Project, where they produce a cohesive collection showcasing their advanced textile design skills. The Professional Practice: The Company module provides opportunities for collaborative, student-led projects in real-world scenarios, fostering teamwork, inclusivity, and engagement with industry expertise. Optional modules allow students to expand their knowledge in areas such as creative thinking and problem solving, digital cultures, entrepreneurship, experimental publishing, visual display, global marketing, sustainability in business and design, professional and collaborative projects, and visual culture. Through workshops, live projects, critiques, and field experiences, students gain practical experience, deepen conceptual understanding, and develop interdisciplinary awareness.
