COURSE CURRICULUM

The Philosophy MA offers a comprehensive and flexible program combining core and optional modules that develop advanced philosophical knowledge and research skills. Core modules include Contemporary Topics in Philosophy, which explores current debates and developments in modern philosophy, and Mind, Knowledge and Reality, which examines central issues in metaphysics, epistemology, and the philosophy of mind. The Philosophy of Value investigates key ideas in ethics, aesthetics, and political philosophy, while Research Skills in Philosophy prepares students for independent academic work through training in essay writing, research design, and proposal development. Students also complete a Dissertation on a topic of their choice and can undertake Individually Negotiated Topics to study specific philosophers or themes such as Plato, Nietzsche, or Wittgenstein in depth. Optional modules enable further specialisation in areas such as Business, Morality, and Markets; Classical Chinese or Indian Philosophy; Crime and Punishment; Happiness and Wellbeing; Heidegger and the Philosophy of Being; Philosophical Pessimism; Philosophy and Ethics in Psychology and AI; The Ethics of Climate Change; and Truth, Opinion, and Ideology. This rich combination of modules encourages deep critical engagement, independent thought, and the ability to address both classical and contemporary philosophical problems with clarity and analytical rigour.
