COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Languages and Cultures program offers a rich blend of core and optional modules that explore language, identity, memory, and global cultural exchange. Core modules such as Approaches to Languages and Cultures, Nation, Culture, Power, and Narrative, Place, Identity introduce students to key analytical frameworks, critical theories, and cultural narratives across national and transnational contexts. Modules like Memory in National and Transnational Contexts and Transnational Movement in the Age of Globalisation address the role of migration, mobility, and collective memory in shaping modern societies. The Research Skills and Dissertation modules provide essential training in academic research, preparing students to conduct independent studies on topics of their choice. Optional modules offer opportunities to specialise in diverse areas, including Jewish and refugee histories, second language learning, intercultural communication, sociolinguistics, gender and media in the Hispanic world, and modern or medieval history. Students can also explore literary studies, from genre and narrative non-fiction to the influence of new media on global writing. Through this combination of theory, research, and cultural analysis, the program develops a sophisticated understanding of how languages and cultures interact and evolve within today’s interconnected, multilingual world.
