COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Film Studies program at the University of Southampton provides students with a comprehensive understanding of film theory, history, and practice, combining compulsory and optional modules to develop advanced analytical and research skills. Core modules such as Classical Film Theory and Textual Analysis, Post-Classical Film Theory: Film History and Cinephilia, Research in Film Studies, Preparing for the Dissertation, and the Film Studies Dissertation guide students through critical approaches, historical perspectives, and the practical requirements of completing an independent research project. These modules focus on the development of theoretical knowledge, textual interpretation, research methodology, and formal academic writing. Students also have the opportunity to tailor their learning through a range of optional modules, including Auteur Filmmakers, Current Issues in Film Distribution and Exhibition, Digital Screen Cultures, East Asian Noir, Film Policy: National and Global Contexts, Film Stardom and Celebrity Culture, Individually Negotiated Topics, and The Supernatural in Audiovisual Culture. These options allow students to explore specific genres, regions, cultural phenomena, and industry practices, as well as emerging trends in digital media.
