COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Film and Cultural Management at the University of Southampton combines the study of film theory, history, and cultural management, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the film industry and its societal impact. Core modules develop critical analytical skills through the study of classical and post-classical film theory, textual analysis, and cinephilia, while research-focused modules prepare students to undertake a dissertation involving original investigation and rigorous scholarly presentation. Students explore contemporary issues in film distribution and exhibition, as well as the role of policy in shaping national and global film industries, with particular attention to the UK, Europe, and East Asia. Optional modules allow for specialized study in areas such as auteur filmmakers, digital screen cultures, East Asian Noir, film stardom and celebrity culture, supernatural themes in audiovisual media, or individually negotiated topics tailored to students’ research interests. This combination of theory, research, and applied study equips graduates with the knowledge and practical insight to understand the complexities of film as both a cultural product and a managed industry. By integrating the creative, historical, and managerial aspects of film, students are prepared for careers in cultural organizations, film institutions, media management, or further postgraduate research, developing skills that are applicable across global and interdisciplinary contexts.
