COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in English Literary Studies at the University of Southampton equips students with advanced knowledge and research skills in literary analysis, preparing them for careers in teaching, publishing, cultural management, or further academic study. Core modules such as Adventures in Literary Research develop expertise in research methodologies, literary theory, criticism, book history, and textual scholarship, while the English Dissertation allows students to undertake an independent, in-depth research project under supervisor guidance. Students can tailor their studies through optional modules covering diverse areas, including critical and creative concepts, literary genres, and period-specific approaches such as Shakespeare, the long eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. The program also addresses contemporary intersections of literature, culture, and society, examining topics like digital culture, narrative non-fiction, popular fiction, and the role of literature in social change. Modules such as Literary Industries and New Media, Communicating the Cultural Industries, and Transnational Movement in the Age of Globalisation explore the global literary landscape, considering cultural narratives, migration, diversity, and emerging media forms. The course fosters critical thinking, archival research, and advanced textual interpretation, enabling students to understand literature’s cultural, historical, and social significance and to communicate their findings effectively through both written and oral formats.
