COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA English Literary Studies at the University of Southampton offers a specialised pathway in 20th century and contemporary literature, providing students with an opportunity to explore the cultural, social, and political contexts that shape modern writing. Core modules such as Adventures in Literary Research and Approaches to the Long Twentieth Century equip students with advanced research skills, theoretical knowledge, and a deep understanding of critical debates in modern literary studies. The English Dissertation allows students to undertake independent research on a topic of their choice, applying scholarly methods and critical analysis. Optional modules offer flexibility to tailor the degree to individual interests, covering areas such as digital culture, literary industries, genre studies, and creative writing. Students can engage with subjects including the relationship between literature and social change, narrative non-fiction, popular fiction, scriptwriting, and the art and craft of fiction. The program also explores global perspectives through modules on nation, culture, power, and transnational movements, providing insights into migration, globalisation, and diversity. Writing for Children and Young People further allows students to develop practical creative skills.
