COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Cultural Heritage at the University of Southampton equips students with the knowledge and skills to engage critically with heritage from local, national, and global perspectives. Core modules provide a strong foundation in understanding the human past, the management of heritage, and contemporary debates surrounding cultural preservation. Archaeology in the Contemporary World explores the ways in which material traces of the past are interpreted and valued in modern society, while Global Cultural Heritage examines tangible and intangible heritage across different cultures, considering ethical, social, and legal dimensions. Maritime Museums and Heritage Management focuses on the protection, interpretation, and dissemination of maritime cultural heritage, reflecting its growing importance within the discipline. The Dissertation or Professional Project allows students to conduct independent research or undertake a practical project, demonstrating their ability to apply theory and research skills in a professional context. Optional modules enable students to tailor their studies to specific interests, including environmental impact assessments on heritage, narrative and identity in cultural contexts, memory in national and transnational settings, digital culture, data management for humanities research, and professional placements within the sector. This program combines theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and professional experience, preparing graduates for careers in heritage management, museum work, cultural consultancy, or further academic study at PhD level.
