COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Cultural Heritage at the University of Southampton provides students with a comprehensive understanding of both global and maritime heritage, equipping them with the skills to work professionally in the heritage sector or pursue further academic study. Core modules such as Archaeology in the Contemporary World examine how human history is interpreted through material traces and how archaeology is practiced in contemporary contexts. Global Cultural Heritage explores the diversity of tangible and intangible heritage, while Maritime Museums and Heritage Management focuses on the protection, management, and dissemination of maritime cultural heritage. Students undertake a Dissertation or Professional Project, allowing them to conduct an independent research project or applied professional work under academic supervision. Optional modules offer opportunities to develop specialized skills and knowledge, including GIS for Archaeology, Digital Forms, Maritime Aspects of Culture, Memory in National and Transnational Contexts, Narrative, Place, Identity, and Nation, Culture, Power. Other modules, such as Professional Placement in the Archaeological and Cultural Heritage Sector, provide practical experience, while Data Management for Humanities Research and Text as Data develop technical and analytical skills. Themes in the Ancient World explores a wide range of historical contexts. Collectively, the program blends theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and critical analysis to prepare graduates for careers in museums, heritage management, public history, and related fields.
