COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Creative Writing at the University of Southampton offers students the opportunity to develop advanced skills across multiple forms of contemporary writing, including fiction, scriptwriting, creative non-fiction, writing for young people, and poetry. Core modules such as the Creative Project allow students to undertake an extended, independent piece of writing under the guidance of experienced tutors, applying the ideas and techniques learned throughout the program. The Creative Skills Workshop provides a supportive environment for weekly mini-lectures, group feedback, and one-to-one mentoring, helping students refine their craft and develop a professional writing practice. Optional modules enable students to tailor their learning to specific interests and career goals, covering areas such as literary research, genre studies, Shakespeare, the long eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries, digital forms, narrative non-fiction, literary industries, writing for children and young people, scriptwriting, and popular fiction in digital culture. These modules combine theoretical, historical, and practical perspectives, encouraging students to engage critically with literary, cultural, and social contexts while experimenting with different styles and formats. The program also emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches and professional development, preparing students for careers in writing, publishing, literary research, and the broader cultural and creative industries.
