COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Sociology and Criminology degree provides students with a comprehensive understanding of social structures, inequalities, crime, and justice, equipping them with the skills to analyse and address contemporary social challenges. In the first year, students explore foundational concepts, including criminology, social theory, deviance, inequality, and research methods, building a strong base for critical analysis and empirical investigation. They examine the criminal justice system, historical perspectives on social control, and the interplay between society, crime, and social responses. In the second year, students advance their understanding of quantitative and qualitative research methods, social theory, and public policy, while having the option to study topics such as childhood, youth justice, collective action, criminological psychology, race, gender, wellbeing, and social change. The third year focuses on independent research through a dissertation and practical research preparation, allowing students to conduct empirical studies. Students can also choose from modules exploring advanced quantitative analysis, crime scene investigation, global terrorism, social stratification, sexuality, penology, migration, and techno-harms. Throughout the program, the curriculum integrates sociological and criminological perspectives, combining theory, policy, and applied research, to prepare graduates for careers in social research, policy development, law enforcement, criminal justice, and other fields addressing complex social issues.
