COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Sociology and Criminology degree provides an in-depth understanding of the interplay between society and crime, equipping students to critically analyse social behaviour, justice, and criminality. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules on the criminal justice system, criminology, social theory, inequalities, and research methods, while exploring historical perspectives on deviance and contemporary social challenges. Year two focuses on advancing theoretical and methodological skills, including qualitative and quantitative research, data analysis, social theory, and public policy, alongside options such as criminological psychology, comparative youth justice, race and ethnicity, and social change. Students gain insights into global and post-colonial criminological perspectives, social stratification, law enforcement, and the impact of modernisation processes on societies. In the final year, the program emphasises independent research through a dissertation and practical guidance on designing and conducting empirical studies, with modules covering applied quantitative analysis, crime scene investigation, gender and society, migration and development, penology, and emerging social issues such as techno-harms, violence, and sexual offending. Across all three years, the degree combines sociological and criminological approaches, integrating interdisciplinary perspectives from psychology, anthropology, and geography, to prepare graduates for careers in social research, criminal justice, policy development, law enforcement, and roles addressing complex social and criminal issues in diverse contexts.
