COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Population Sciences degree offers a comprehensive study of population dynamics, social structures, and geographical processes over three years. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge through modules on globalisation, population and society, empirical research methods, and social research skills, with optional modules covering intercultural communication, international relations, and environmental systems. Year two builds on this foundation with core modules in geographic information systems, social data analytics, and population change in low- and middle-income countries, alongside optional modules exploring wellbeing, sustainability, cultural geographies, race and ethnicity, and international politics. These modules develop students’ analytical, quantitative, and methodological skills while fostering critical understanding of global and regional population issues. In the final year, students focus on applied social quantitative analysis and an independent dissertation, allowing them to conduct in-depth research in areas such as migration, global health, climate adaptation, economic geography, social justice, gender and sexuality, and the creative economy. Additional optional modules enable students to examine contemporary challenges including longevity, resilience, development, and environmental health. Across the degree, students engage with both theoretical frameworks and practical applications, including fieldwork opportunities, preparing them for careers as population analysts, social researchers, regional planners, or other roles that require strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills in understanding complex social and demographic phenomena.
