COURSE CURRICULUM

The Politics and International Relations degree at the University of Southampton provides a comprehensive exploration of political systems, ideas, and contemporary issues, combining theoretical knowledge with practical research skills. In the first year, students study foundational modules including British politics, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, and contemporary global challenges, alongside courses on research methods and social science analysis. These modules equip students with the ability to critically evaluate political ideas, assess evidence, and understand the forces shaping global and domestic politics. In the second year, students continue with core topics such as the struggle for democracy and have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of optional modules, including American political thought, anarchism, children’s rights, Chinese politics, ethics, gender and politics, migration, public opinion, and political behaviour. This allows students to tailor their studies to specific interests while further developing analytical, research, and evaluative skills. The final year focuses on independent research through an 8,000-word dissertation, enabling students to synthesize knowledge and conduct in-depth study of a chosen political topic. Optional advanced modules explore areas such as democratic theory, EU governance, globalisation, green political thought, and the politics of modernisation, preparing graduates for careers in politics, policy, international organisations, research, journalism, and advocacy.
