COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Politics and Economics degree provides an integrated understanding of political systems and economic principles, equipping students with analytical, research, and critical thinking skills relevant to careers in government, finance, business, and advocacy. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules in comparative politics, engaging political ideas, international relations, macroeconomics, microeconomics, statistics, and economics skills and employability, preparing them for more advanced study. In the second year, the curriculum develops deeper theoretical and practical expertise through intermediate macroeconomics and microeconomics, econometrics, applied econometrics, and modules in democratic theory, the struggle for democracy, and political thought, while offering optional topics such as Chinese politics, development economics, industrial economics, gender and politics, and social change. Students also prepare for their dissertation through preliminary research and employability modules. The third year allows students to undertake a dissertation in either politics and international relations or economics, alongside advanced modules in international macroeconomics, applied economics, finance, trade, labour markets, and policy evaluation. Throughout the degree, students engage with quantitative and qualitative research methods, experimental approaches, and real-world applications, gaining transferable skills in data analysis, decision-making, problem-solving, and professional development, ensuring readiness for diverse careers in both the public and private sectors.
