COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physical Geography degree provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the Earth’s physical systems and the interactions between human and natural environments. In the first year, students build a foundation in key areas such as geomorphology, ecology, conservation, risk and hazard assessment, and field research methods, complemented by modules exploring social and cultural aspects of geography. Practical skills are developed through fieldwork and laboratory-based learning, enabling students to observe and analyse physical and human environments. In the second year, students advance their knowledge through modules on geographic information systems, remote sensing, environmental change, sustainability, global health, and long-term environmental processes, often enhanced by overseas field trips. Optional modules allow for focused study on topics such as arid environments, urban geography, freshwater ecosystems, climate change, and energy systems. In the final year, students undertake an individual research project to synthesise their learning and develop independent research skills. Advanced modules explore climate adaptation, environmental management, biodiversity, glaciers, river systems, and nature-based solutions. Throughout the course, students gain practical experience in data collection, analysis, and application, preparing them for careers in environmental management, GIS analysis, policy, education, and research, or for further study in environmental and physical geography.
