COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Oceanography degree provides a comprehensive understanding of marine and Earth systems, combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills. In the first year, students study the fundamental processes of the Earth and oceans, including coevolution of life and Earth, dynamic Earth, Earth and ocean systems, physics of the ocean, marine ecology and evolution, environmental biogeochemistry, and scientific literacy to develop critical thinking and research skills. In the second year, the focus shifts to more specialised topics, such as geochemistry, monitoring coastal and estuarine environments, ocean data analysis and modelling, phytoplankton and primary production, sediment processes, and the dynamics of the ocean. Students can also choose optional modules including geohazards, global climate change, sustainability challenges, and marine benthic and zooplankton ecology, allowing them to explore specific interests. The final year emphasises applied skills and independent research through modules such as applied oceanography and fieldwork, and an independent research project or dissertation. Optional modules in the third year include biogeochemical cycles, coastal sediment dynamics, computational data analysis, environmental and engineering geology, large-scale ocean processes and climate, palaeoclimate change, seafloor exploration, and shelf seas dynamics. The program integrates fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and computational techniques, preparing students for careers in marine research, environmental consultancy, and coastal management, or for further postgraduate study.
