COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Occupational Therapy degree at Southampton provides a comprehensive three-year program designed to develop students into skilled and confident occupational therapists. In the first year, students study foundational modules such as Enabling Occupations for Health and Wellbeing, Foundations of Occupational Therapy Practice, and Occupational Therapy Concepts covering both extrinsic and intrinsic factors. These modules build understanding of the bio-psycho-social-behavioural aspects of occupation and how they influence health and wellbeing. Students also complete a six-week placement to gain practical experience in health, social care, or related sectors. In the second year, the focus shifts to integrating theory and practice through modules such as Integrated Occupational Therapy Principles, Practice and Theory, Occupations by Design, Therapeutic Engagement Skills, and Research Methods for Occupational Therapy. Students complete two six-week placements to apply their learning in real-world settings, enhancing professional competence and therapeutic skills. The third year develops advanced skills through modules including Advanced Communication Skills for Occupational Therapy, Advancing Occupational Therapy Practice, and Leadership and Innovation in Healthcare. Students undertake an 11-week placement and complete a research project, consolidating their ability to engage critically with evidence and apply complex therapeutic approaches. Across the program, experiential learning, reflective practice, and professional placements prepare graduates to deliver high-quality, person-centred occupational therapy in diverse healthcare contexts.
