COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mental Health Nursing degree prepares students to become skilled, compassionate professionals capable of supporting individuals with mental health needs across the lifespan. In the first year, students gain a foundational understanding of health and care from pre-conception to death, integrating physical health and pharmacology with mental health practice. They also develop professional skills and knowledge through modules on working in partnership in mental health nursing and participate in their first clinical placements, gaining practical experience in acute, community, and specialized settings. Portfolio work consolidates learning and ensures readiness for the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements. In the second year, students explore epidemiology, global and public health, and inclusion health, developing an understanding of socially excluded populations and applying evidence-based practice. This year includes further clinical placements to build hands-on experience and a research methods module to enhance critical thinking and analytical skills. The third year focuses on leadership and innovation in healthcare, preparing students for the evolving demands of mental health services. Students complete advanced clinical placements, applying their accumulated knowledge and skills in real-world settings. A student-led project enables independent research, data collection, and analysis, fostering professional growth and ensuring graduates are equipped to practice safely and effectively as registered mental health nurses.
