COURSE CURRICULUM

This mathematics degree offers a rigorous and flexible pathway through pure and applied mathematics, providing students with strong analytical, computational, and problem-solving skills applicable across a wide range of fields. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in calculus, linear algebra, number theory, statistics, dynamics, relativity, and computational mathematics, complemented by workshops and core skills modules to enhance employability and practical abilities. The second year advances these foundations with modules in analysis, partial differential equations, numerical methods, statistical inference, and operational research, while students can also choose from specialized options such as algorithms, data science, financial mathematics, geometry and topology, mathematical physics, graph theory, and stochastic processes, enabling interdisciplinary learning and real-world applications. In the third year, students undertake an individual mathematics project, providing an opportunity to explore a personal area of interest and develop research skills. Advanced optional modules include actuarial mathematics, mathematical finance, optimization, fluid dynamics, partial differential equations, complex analysis, algebraic topology, machine learning, mathematical biology, and statistical modelling, among others. The program emphasizes the application of mathematical theory to real-world problems, development of computational proficiency using software such as Python and R, and preparation for careers in industry, finance, research, or further postgraduate study.
