COURSE CURRICULUM

The Marine Biology course is a three-year program designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of marine ecosystems and organisms, combining theoretical knowledge with extensive practical experience. In the first year, students study foundational subjects including Earth and ocean systems, environmental biogeochemistry, functional marine biology, marine ecology and evolution, marine invertebrates, and ocean physics, alongside developing scientific literacy. Year two builds on this knowledge, focusing on coastal ecology, marine benthic and vertebrate ecology, phytoplankton and zooplankton processes, sediment dynamics, monitoring coastal and estuarine environments, and molecular tools for marine biology research, often incorporating fieldwork and laboratory-based learning. In the final year, students undertake applied oceanography and fieldwork, an independent research project, and can choose from advanced modules including behavioural physiology, deep-sea ecology, fish evolution and ecology, global challenges in biology, marine conservation and policy, marine fisheries ecology, marine microbial ecology and biotechnology, seascape ecology, and understanding coral reefs. The program emphasizes hands-on learning, integrating boat-based field studies, laboratory techniques, data analysis, and research projects, ensuring students develop the skills necessary for careers in research, conservation, wildlife management, and related fields. The course equips graduates with in-depth knowledge of marine systems and the practical expertise to address contemporary environmental and ecological challenges.
