COURSE CURRICULUM

This Marine Biology and Oceanography course offers a comprehensive study of marine systems, combining theoretical knowledge with extensive practical experience. In the first year, students explore foundational subjects including Earth and ocean systems, environmental biogeochemistry, functional marine biology, marine ecology and evolution, marine invertebrates, and ocean physics, building a strong understanding of biological and physical processes. Year two focuses on applied ecology and marine research methods through modules such as coastal ecology field courses, monitoring coastal and estuarine environments, phytoplankton and primary production, sediment processes, zooplankton ecology, and dynamic oceanography, alongside optional modules in marine benthic ecology, marine vertebrates, molecular research tools, and ocean data analysis. In the final year, students consolidate their knowledge through applied oceanography, fieldwork, and an independent research project, while studying shelf seas and shelf edge dynamics. Optional modules allow further specialization in areas such as deep-sea ecology, fish evolution and ecology, behavioural physiology, global environmental challenges, large-scale ocean processes and climate, marine conservation and policy, marine microbial ecology, seafloor exploration, seascape ecology, and coral reef studies. The course integrates laboratory work, field trips, and hands-on research to prepare graduates for careers in marine science, conservation, government, or further advanced study.
