COURSE CURRICULUM

The Politics and International Relations degree offers an in-depth exploration of political systems, global governance, and contemporary challenges shaping the world. In the first year, students study foundational topics including British politics, comparative politics, international relations, political ideas, and the social and methodological skills needed for social science research. Modules cover key global dilemmas, modern political thought, and empirical research methods, providing students with a solid theoretical and analytical grounding. In the second year, students build on this foundation by studying advanced topics such as theorising international politics and choosing from a range of modules covering areas like American political thought, Chinese politics, collective action, ethics of public policy and war, gender and power, migration, social change, and political justice. These modules allow students to explore diverse perspectives, critically analyse contemporary issues, and apply theoretical concepts to real-world situations. The final year focuses on independent research through an 8,000-word dissertation, enabling students to integrate and apply the skills and knowledge developed throughout their studies. Optional modules in the final year allow further specialisation in areas such as public opinion, political behaviour, green political thought, democracy, European governance, and the ethics of technology, preparing graduates for careers in policy, research, international organisations, and related fields.
