COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Geology course provides a thorough understanding of the Earth’s formation, structure, and dynamic processes across geological time. In the first year, students study foundational modules including the coevolution of life and Earth, dynamic Earth processes, earth materials, and the Earth and ocean system. Practical skills are developed through residential fieldwork courses and modules on scientific literacy and environmental biogeochemistry. In the second year, the focus shifts to advanced topics such as exploration geophysics, remote sensing, geochemistry, geohazards, igneous and metamorphic petrology, sedimentary processes, palaeobiology, structural geology, and GIS, alongside continued fieldwork and skill development. The third year emphasizes applied and independent research with modules covering Earth resources for the green transition, independent mapping projects, and the evolving Earth, alongside optional specialized modules such as biogeochemical cycles, earthquake and volcano seismology, environmental radioactivity, environmental and engineering geology, palaeoclimate change, seafloor surveying, and volcanic and mantle processes. Throughout the degree, students combine theoretical knowledge with extensive practical experience, gaining skills in data collection, analysis, and interpretation. The program equips graduates with the expertise and practical skills required for careers in the geological and environmental sectors, research, and resource management, while fostering a deep understanding of the Earth system and its responses to natural and anthropogenic change.
