COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Geography course offers a broad and in-depth study of the Earth’s physical and human systems, combining theoretical learning with extensive fieldwork and research. In Year 1, students develop foundational knowledge through modules such as Dynamic Landscapes, Geographies of Risk, Society, Culture and Space, and The Earth System. These explore globalisation, geomorphology, environmental hazards, and human-environment interactions, supported by practical experience in the First Year Fieldcourse. Year 2 builds on this foundation with core modules including Exploring Physical Environments: Overseas Fieldcourse, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing for Earth Observation, and Research Project Preparation. Students can also choose from a wide range of optional modules covering topics such as coastal processes, arid environments, freshwater ecosystems, sustainability challenges, and global climate change. Year 3 focuses on independent research through the Individual Project, where students apply analytical and field skills to a chosen topic. Optional modules allow for further specialisation in areas like glaciers, biodiversity, environmental law, nature-based solutions, and river basin management. Fieldwork opportunities in locations such as Tenerife, Namibia, and Cambodia enhance real-world learning. Throughout the course, students develop practical, analytical, and professional skills essential for careers in environmental management, sustainability, and geographic research.
