COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Criminology degree provides a comprehensive understanding of crime, justice, and social responses to offending, combining theoretical knowledge with practical research skills. In the first year, students explore foundational topics, including the structure and functioning of the criminal justice system, criminological theory, historical and social perspectives on deviance, inequality, and research methods. Modules develop critical thinking and the ability to assess evidence, understand social problems, and engage with key social theories. In the second year, the focus broadens to global and post-colonial perspectives, quantitative and qualitative research methods, and the application of social data analytics. Students can choose from a range of specialist modules, such as youth justice, criminological psychology, law enforcement, race and ethnicity, social change, and techno-harms, enabling them to tailor their studies to specific interests. The final year emphasizes independent research through the dissertation and practical application of skills in designing and conducting empirical research projects. Optional modules allow exploration of topics like terrorism, penology, sexuality, gender, and social stratification, as well as applied research techniques. Overall, the program equips students with the knowledge and analytical skills to understand the causes and consequences of crime, evaluate social and legal responses, and prepare for careers in criminology, social research, policy, or criminal justice.
