COURSE CURRICULUM

The Medicinal Chemistry degree offers a comprehensive study of chemical principles and their application in drug discovery and development. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in core chemistry topics, including structure, bonding, energetics, and periodic trends, while also developing essential mathematical, analytical, and practical laboratory skills through hands-on experiments. The second year advances into more complex areas such as molecular quantum mechanics, reaction mechanisms, and organometallic chemistry. Students are introduced to Medicinal Chemistry I and II, exploring drug design, therapeutic discovery, enzyme catalysis, and glycobiology, alongside continued practical training. In the final year, the focus shifts to advanced chemical and medicinal topics, including inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry at the research level. Modules such as Medicinal Chemistry III and Synthetic Methods in Organic Chemistry deepen understanding of molecular design, synthesis, and evaluation of new medicines. Students also enhance practical and research abilities through advanced laboratory work. Optional modules, including Advanced Characterisation Techniques, Electrochemistry, Simulation Methods, and Sustainable Chemistry, allow specialisation in areas like green chemistry, computational modelling, or analytical techniques.
