COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biology degree provides a broad and integrated study of life, from molecular and cellular processes to whole organisms, populations, and ecosystems. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge in cell biology, physiology, and biodiversity, while learning to think like a scientist through experimental design and data analysis. Modules such as Organisms and their Environment explore the impacts of climate change and human activity on ecosystems, while Origins of Biodiversity examines global patterns of species diversity over time. In the second year, the focus expands to evolutionary biology, plant development, and quantitative research methods, alongside optional modules that allow exploration of topics like animal behaviour, conservation, bioinformatics, microbiology, and vertebrate development. Field courses provide practical experience in diverse settings, including the New Forest, Southern Spain, and freshwater ecosystems. The third year emphasizes advanced and applied studies, offering options in areas such as climate adaptation, plant biology, behavioural ecology, conservation, microbial communities, immunology, and disease mechanisms. Students can undertake independent research, laboratory projects, or fieldwork to consolidate skills and knowledge. Across all years, the degree develops critical thinking, practical laboratory and field skills, and transferable competencies, preparing graduates for careers in research, conservation, biotechnology, environmental management, and related biological sciences fields.
