COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biochemistry degree provides a comprehensive understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying life, covering topics from DNA, proteins, and cells to complex organisms. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules in the chemistry of life, cell biology and physiology, genetics, and scientific thinking, developing skills in hypothesis formulation, experimental design, and data analysis. In the second year, the focus expands to protein structure and function, genetic information flow, and practical applications in areas such as pharmacology, immunology, microbiology, neuroscience, and environmental biochemistry. Students can also choose optional modules exploring global health, bioinformatics, evolutionary biology, and adaptive physiology, allowing them to tailor their studies to their interests. In the final year, students engage in advanced modules covering molecular cell biology, molecular recognition, and the molecular and structural basis of disease, while optional modules offer specialization in areas such as neurodegenerative disease, molecular pharmacology, microbiomes, bioinformatics, and plant cell biology. The program emphasizes research-led learning through laboratory projects and in-silico investigations, fostering practical skills, analytical thinking, and scientific communication. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in research, healthcare, biotechnology, education, and industry, equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in the biochemical sciences.
