COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng Medical Engineering degree equips students with the knowledge and skills to design, develop, and implement healthcare technologies that improve patient care and support clinicians. In the first year, students study foundational engineering concepts, including mechanical systems, thermofluids, electrical and electronic systems, mathematics, and an introduction to medical engineering, alongside data science and computing for engineers. These modules provide a strong base in design, analysis, and problem-solving, enabling students to apply engineering principles to healthcare challenges. In the second year, the curriculum advances to biomedical engineering research, electronics and control, fluid mechanics, human biology, mechanics and vibration, systems design, and engineering management, giving students a deeper understanding of human physiology and healthcare systems while refining their practical engineering skills. The third year focuses on biomaterials, human factors, orthopaedic biomechanics, engineering design with management, and an individual project, allowing students to integrate their learning into real-world applications. Optional modules, including biomedical imaging, computational biology, finite element analysis, manufacturing and materials, and robotic systems, provide opportunities to specialize in areas of interest. Across all years, students engage in hands-on projects, lab work, and design-build-test exercises, preparing them for professional careers in medical engineering, healthcare technology, and related fields.
