COURSE CURRICULUM

This Philosophy program provides students with a comprehensive exploration of philosophical thought from ancient to modern times, encouraging critical thinking, rigorous reasoning, and engagement with fundamental questions about human existence, knowledge, and morality. In the first year, students study core topics including Ancient Greek Philosophy, Ethics, Human Understanding, Reason and Argument, and Truth, Knowledge, and Objectivity, alongside optional modules that allow exploration of applied ethics, faith and reason, freedom and responsibility, and cultural and artistic perspectives. The second year focuses on deeper philosophical inquiry with the compulsory module Self and Agency in the History of Philosophy, examining concepts such as free will, moral responsibility, and the independent self, while optional modules cover areas like aesthetics, animal ethics, epistemology, globalisation, and the philosophy of mind, offering interdisciplinary engagement with contemporary issues. In the third year, students undertake a Philosophy Dissertation, developing independent research skills and contributing original thought to a chosen topic. Additional optional modules enable study of specialized themes, including political theory, classical Indian and Chinese philosophy, philosophy of sex, sexuality and gender, ethics in psychology and AI, climate change, and philosophical pessimism. The program combines historical, analytical, and applied approaches, preparing students for careers requiring critical reasoning, ethical judgement, and effective communication, while fostering a deep understanding of philosophical ideas and their relevance to society.
