COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Philosophy, Ethics, and Religion degree provides a comprehensive exploration of fundamental philosophical questions, ethical issues, and the role of religion in society. In the first year, students study core modules such as Ancient Greek Philosophy, Ethics, Faith and Reason, Human Understanding, Reason and Argument, and Truth, Knowledge, and Objectivity, while choosing from a range of optional modules including Applied Ethics, Existentialism, Freedom and Responsibility, Human Origins, and Philosophical Perspectives on the Common Law. These modules develop analytical reasoning, ethical reflection, and critical engagement with historical and contemporary debates. In the second year, students focus on Moral Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, and Self and Agency in the History of Philosophy, with options spanning topics like Animal Ethics, Ethics of Global Poverty, Democratic Theory, Epistemology, Globalisation, and Kantian philosophy. This encourages interdisciplinary thinking and the application of philosophical methods to real-world concerns. The third year emphasizes independent research through the Philosophy Dissertation and allows students to select advanced modules such as Classical Indian and Chinese Philosophy, Islamic Philosophy, Philosophy of Sex, Sexuality, and Gender, the Ethics of Climate Change, and Human Mobility in the Asia Pacific. Across all three years, students gain rigorous training in philosophical analysis, ethical reasoning, and critical reflection, equipping them to engage thoughtfully with complex moral, social, and cultural issues in both academic and practical contexts.
