COURSE CURRICULUM

The Philosophy and English Literature BA offers a broad and flexible curriculum across three years, combining rigorous philosophical inquiry with literary study. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge through compulsory modules in ethics, reason and argument, essay writing, the novel, and truth, knowledge, and objectivity. Optional modules allow exploration of applied linguistics, applied ethics, epistemology, faith and reason, freedom and responsibility, literary transformations, world dramas, and other interdisciplinary topics. Year two builds on this foundation, with a compulsory module on the global context of English literature, alongside a wide selection of options covering aesthetics, African literature, anarchism, animal ethics, creative writing, globalisation, psychology, Kantian philosophy, logic, metaphysics, and social, cultural, and political debates. In the third year, students focus on advanced and specialised topics, including climate and environmental literature, American Gothic, animal studies, Austen, classical Indian philosophy, creative writing in schools, Holocaust literature, Islamic philosophy, Nietzsche, Heidegger, philosophy of mind, and contemporary issues in ethics, sex, and gender. The program emphasizes independent research through dissertations in both literature and philosophy, allowing students to engage deeply with topics of personal interest. Across all years, students develop critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and creative skills, preparing them for diverse careers or further academic study.
