COURSE CURRICULUM

The Liberal Arts degree provides an interdisciplinary approach to studying the arts, humanities, and social sciences, enabling students to explore complex cultural, ethical, and political questions. In the first year, students take core modules such as English on the Move, Human Understanding and Understanding Humans, The Invention of English Literature: Medieval to Early Modern, The Novel, and Truth, Knowledge, and Objectivity, which develop foundational skills in literary analysis, critical thinking, and cultural understanding. Students also choose from optional modules spanning linguistics, music composition, ethics, history, sociology, film, archaeology, and international relations, allowing them to explore diverse perspectives. In the second year, core modules include Revolutions in English Literature, Self, Society, Nature, and Normativity, and The Worlding of English Literature, furthering analytical and research skills while optional modules allow specialization in areas such as contemporary cinema, democratic theory, comparative youth justice, discourse analysis, European prehistory, philosophy of religion, and American musical history. The final year emphasizes independent research through the English Dissertation, alongside optional modules like English as a Global Language, Fantasy Film and Fiction, Global Hip Hop, Philosophy and Ethics in Psychology and AI, and Presenting the Past: Museums and Heritage, enabling students to develop expertise in their chosen fields while cultivating critical, creative, and interdisciplinary skills applicable to a wide range of careers or further study.
