COURSE CURRICULUM

The Modern Languages and Linguistics degree offers an in-depth study of language, culture, and communication across the globe. In the first year, students focus on introductory modules tailored to their chosen language, including academic skills, cultural studies, and language-specific courses such as French, German, Spanish, or Portuguese. Foundational modules also explore language in its social context, cultural analysis, and the basics of linguistics and ethnography, providing students with the analytical tools needed for further study. In the second year, students continue with language-specific modules while engaging in more advanced study of culture, communication, and research methods. They explore topics such as globalisation, migration, gender, race, and intercultural communication, alongside modules on linguistics, psycholinguistics, and sociolinguistics. The third year emphasizes independent research and practical application, with students completing a dissertation or professional project and studying modules on digital media, language, and communication. Optional modules allow exploration of sociolinguistics, translation, minority languages, urban multilingualism, language teaching, and historical or cultural studies linked to specific regions. Throughout the degree, students develop critical thinking, research, and analytical skills, along with practical language proficiency, preparing them for careers in international communication, education, research, and culturally informed professional roles.
