COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Graphic Communication course at Winchester School of Art is structured to develop students’ expertise and professional readiness over three years. In the first year, students engage with foundational modules that introduce the principles and practices of the program’s four communities of learning: identity and information, design for good, language and narrative, and future environments. They explore contemporary practice and critical issues in graphic communication, study its histories and theories, and develop essential skills and working methods through practical exercises. In the second year, students deepen their skills through collaborative and studio-based modules, exploring interdisciplinary contexts and developing expertise within chosen communities of learning. The year also focuses on professional and critical contexts, employability, and self-directed projects that encourage independent thinking and practical application of knowledge. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through externally focused projects, a self-directed final major project, and modules designed to prepare them for the creative industries. Professional planning and promotion modules provide guidance on career strategies, portfolio development, and preparing for employment or further study. Throughout the course, students combine conceptual, technical, and creative skills, engage with industry professionals, and have opportunities to present their work in exhibitions and showcases, ensuring they graduate as confident, career-ready graphic communication practitioners.
