COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Human Geography course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of how social, economic, political, and cultural processes shape human experiences and environments. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules exploring globalisation, dynamic landscapes, urban and natural environments, geographies of risk, principles of geography, society, culture, and space, and the Earth system, complemented by practical fieldwork to develop research and observational skills. In the second year, the focus shifts to human geography methods and applied analysis, with modules in geographical information systems, research project preparation, and researching human geography, alongside optional modules covering topics such as coastal landscapes, freshwater ecosystems, global health, sustainability challenges, climate change, population change, race and ethnicity, urban geography, water pollution, and remote sensing. The course emphasizes hands-on experience through fieldcourses, including international opportunities, and the use of specialist facilities. In the final year, students consolidate learning through an independent project and choose from advanced modules such as adapting to climate change, environmental sensing, evolutionary economic geography, gender and society, migration and development, nature-based solutions, river basin management, global sustainability, and creative economy. The program combines theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and critical analysis to prepare graduates for careers in policy, research, consultancy, or further study, equipping them to understand and address complex global challenges.
