COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film Studies degree provides an in-depth and diverse exploration of cinema, combining theoretical, historical, and practical approaches. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules on film theory, form, style, European cinema, and the intersection of film, art, and technology, developing critical thinking and analytical skills. In the second year, the focus broadens to include early and silent cinema, global cinemas, and elective modules such as animation, contemporary British cinema, audiences, film noir, and digital media practices. These modules encourage students to engage with varied cinematic forms, understand cultural contexts, and consider the social, political, and technological dimensions of film and media. Practical experience and professional applications are integrated through modules exploring industry practices, audience studies, and digital technologies, alongside opportunities for placements and engagement with communities. In the final year, students undertake an 8,000-word dissertation, applying research skills to a specific area of film studies, while elective modules allow further specialization in subjects such as American cinema, crime TV, environmental cinema, fantasy film, horror, music in film, and popular global screen cultures. This combination of theory, practice, and research equips students with a deep understanding of cinema’s artistic, cultural, and industrial dimensions, preparing them for careers in film, media, and related fields.
