COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Film and History degree provides a comprehensive exploration of cinema and historical study across three years. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules such as History Matters, which examines historical objects and images, and Introduction to Film: Form, Style and Analysis, focusing on cinematic techniques. They also study European cinema and world histories, with optional modules covering topics like the Tudors, the First World War, or cultural studies such as food and ethnography. The second year deepens understanding with modules on Early and Silent Cinema, Global Cinemas, and Making History, which explores how historians engage public audiences. Students can choose from a wide range of interdisciplinary modules such as Film Noir, Contemporary British Cinema, Women and Hollywood, and historical topics including Ancient Rome, Imperial China, or the Cold War. The final year emphasizes independent research through dissertations in both film and history. Optional modules include American Cinema Since 1965, Environmental Cinema, Horror on Film, and global historical studies like the Russian Revolution or India in the World. Overall, the program combines film theory, history, and critical research to develop analytical, creative, and contextual understanding of cinema’s relationship with the past and its influence on culture.
