COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film and English degree at Southampton provides a comprehensive study of cinema and literature across historical, cultural, and theoretical contexts. In year one, students are introduced to film form, style, and analysis, European cinema, poetic language, and the art of the novel, alongside optional modules exploring literary history, theory, and global drama. Year two deepens this foundation with studies in early and silent cinema and the global development of English literature, complemented by a wide range of optional modules in areas such as animation, film noir, African literature, British cinema, digital media, and creative writing. Students can also explore interdisciplinary themes like art philosophy, gender studies, data culture, and environmentalism. In the final year, students select advanced modules in both film and literature, with opportunities to specialise in topics such as American cinema, fantasy fiction, environmental media, horror films, Shakespeare, or global screen cultures. Options for creative and independent research include dissertations in film or English, as well as modules in creative writing, teaching practice, and cultural economics. This diverse program encourages critical thinking, creativity, and professional skills, preparing graduates for careers in film, writing, media, and cultural industries.
