COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Archaeology degree at Southampton offers a comprehensive exploration of human history and cultural development through material remains and scientific analysis. In the first year, students study core modules covering archaeological methods for fieldwork and analysis, practical fieldwork, human origins, global prehistory, historical archaeology, the development of archaeological and anthropological thought, and the archaeology of material culture. Optional modules allow further exploration of topics such as ethical issues, scientific techniques, food and culture, landscapes and seascapes, and art and literature. In the second year, students build on these foundations with modules on contemporary issues and debates in archaeology, research methods, material culture analysis, and continued fieldwork, while also preparing for a potential study abroad or a year in employment. Optional modules include art philosophy, human evolution, animal ethics, osteology, European prehistory, maritime archaeology, and digital culture studies. The final year culminates in an independent archaeology dissertation, where students demonstrate research, analysis, and communication skills. Additional modules provide specialized study in areas such as human evolution, GIS applications, Roman and Anglo-Saxon urbanism, ancient Egypt, molecular archaeology, photogrammetry, heritage presentation, geophysical survey, medieval landscapes, Neolithic Britain, body adornment, and ethical issues like climate change. This degree equips students with both practical and transferable skills, preparing them for careers in archaeology, heritage, research, and related fields.
