COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ancient History degree at Southampton offers a comprehensive exploration of the ancient world, combining historical, archaeological, and cultural studies to help students understand the foundations of contemporary society. In the first year, students build a core understanding of ancient civilizations, studying modules such as Ancient Sources in Context, Introduction to the Ancient World, and The Ancient World in the Modern Day. Practical and interdisciplinary learning is emphasized through archaeology and anthropology-focused modules, as well as opportunities to study Latin and explore ancient leadership, religion, and cultural practices. In the second year, students deepen their expertise through modules like Making History, Ancient Greek Philosophy, Ancient Rome, Cleopatra’s Egypt, and Maritime Archaeology, while also preparing for study abroad or a year in employment. These experiences provide research skills, cultural insights, and practical engagement with historical methods. The final year centers on independent research with the Ancient History Dissertation and Reading Histories, allowing students to demonstrate analytical and research abilities. Optional modules expand understanding of exploration, cross-cultural contact, resistance to Rome, and urbanism, as well as the presentation of history in museums and cultural heritage contexts. The program equips students with critical thinking, research, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in heritage, education, research, and related fields.
