COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Ancient History and History degree offers a comprehensive exploration of global history from ancient to modern times, combining in-depth study of ancient civilizations with wider historical perspectives. In the first year, students engage with core modules such as Ancient Sources in Context, History Matters, Introduction to the Ancient World, and World Histories Introduced, alongside optional modules covering topics from archaeology and material culture to political and social histories of Europe, the Middle East, and beyond. Year two focuses on research and practical experience, including preparation for study abroad, historiographical debates, and work placements, while offering specialized options such as Ancient Greek Philosophy, Ancient Rome, maritime archaeology, imperial China, and modern cultural history. In the final year, students complete a dissertation and can choose from modules that investigate diverse historical themes, including exploration, science, the far right, the Roman Empire, colonial and postcolonial histories, urbanism, and Holocaust studies. The program emphasizes critical thinking, research skills, and the ability to analyze and contextualize sources from a variety of media, including documents, objects, and film. Students also have the opportunity to study Latin and Ancient Greek, access extensive archival collections, and gain international experience through time at partner universities abroad, equipping them for careers in research, heritage, education, and related fields.
