ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The University of Southampton, located in Southampton, England, is a public research university and a founding member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities in the United Kingdom. The university operates seven campuses, with the main campus in the Highfield area, supported by Avenue Campus for Humanities, the National Oceanography Centre for Ocean and Earth Sciences, Southampton General Hospital for Medicine and Health Sciences, and Boldrewood Campus for engineering and maritime technology. Additionally, the university has a School of Art in Winchester and an international branch in Malaysia offering Engineering courses, and in 2024 it became the first UK university to establish a campus in India. Each campus has its own library facilities. For 2023–24, the university reported an income of £742.4 million, including £136.5 million from research grants, with expenditures of £522.3 million. The student body consists of 16,530 undergraduates and 9,470 postgraduates, making it the largest university by higher education students in the South East. The Students’ Union provides support, representation, social activities, and manages 200 societies and 80 sports, alongside a sports ground and a main campus sports centre. The university traces its origins to the Hartley Institution, founded in 1862 through a bequest by Henry Robinson Hartley, who sought to promote the study of sciences, literature, and natural history. Initially a cultural institute for Southampton’s intellectual elite, it became Hartley College in 1883 and expanded in student numbers and facilities. In 1902, it became Hartley University College, affiliated with the University of London, before moving to the Highfield area in 1914, although the outbreak of World War I delayed lectures as the campus was used as a military hospital. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, the college expanded through private donations and civic support, overcoming wartime damage during World War II, hosting allied troops, and developing departments such as Electronics, Sound, and Vibration. The institution eventually evolved into the modern University of Southampton, a prominent center for research and higher education.
