COURSE CURRICULUM

The Crime and Justice course provides students with an in-depth understanding of criminological theory, research methods, and contemporary issues in crime and justice. Students begin by exploring why individuals engage in crime and deviance, examining theories developed across different social, political, and disciplinary contexts. The research project module introduces the philosophical, theoretical, and methodological foundations of social science research, equipping students with skills to critically evaluate and conduct empirical studies in criminal justice. The course also addresses global and transnational crime, covering cybercrime, drug and human trafficking, arms trade, terrorism, environmental crime, and corporate wrongdoing. Students study the characteristics and effects of drug misuse, considering both individual and social harms, as well as the prevalence of drug-related issues in the UK and internationally. Modules on violence and homicide challenge students to critically assess legal and social constructs, including broader societal harms and corporate violence. Cybersecurity and internet governance are explored with attention to legal, ethical, and socio-cultural implications. Comparative perspectives on crime and punishment allow students to analyze how different justice systems respond to crime, employ methods of punishment, and consider alternative approaches. By integrating theoretical knowledge, research skills, and practical insights, the course prepares graduates for careers in policy, research, law enforcement, and criminal justice agencies.
