COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA SEN/ALN (Autism) offers a structured pathway for developing advanced expertise in autism studies, combining specialist and core modules with flexible options. Two specified autism-focused modules form the foundation of the program. Autism: Contexts and Concepts explores the evolution of autism theories, examining their implications for autistic individuals, families, and practitioners. It deepens understanding of sensory perceptual differences and how these may shape unique ways of experiencing the world. Managing and Supporting Autism evaluates models of disability and the continuum of provision for autistic people, helping students critically assess learning theories and support approaches. All full master’s students also complete the Research Methodology module, which develops essential skills in research design, evidence analysis, and critical inquiry. In addition to the core and specialist content, students can choose from a range of optional modules within the Professional Learning program to tailor their studies. Options include Child and Adolescent Mental Health, focusing on causes and implications of mental health difficulties; SEN: Contexts and Concepts, which considers inclusive education and identification of need; and Leading and Managing SEN/ALN, which prepares students for roles such as SENCo/ALNCo. Together, these modules provide a balance of theoretical insight, research skills, and practical application.
