COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Film (Documentary) course offers a comprehensive approach to developing professional filmmaking skills through a combination of practical experience, theoretical understanding, and collaborative projects. The Industry module provides students with guided work experience, lectures on professionalism, film festivals, fundraising, and workshops to enhance their online presence and build a strong CV or showreel portfolio. Specialist Craft Practice and Advanced Specialist Craft Practice modules allow students to refine their technical and creative abilities within their chosen discipline, producing a portfolio that meets both academic assessment criteria and professional industry standards. Film: Theory and Play bridges theory and practice, encouraging collaboration with students from other pathways to explore concepts and techniques through workshops and film exercises. In the Collaborative Practice module, students work in production groups to create a short film, typically six to nine minutes in length, learning to manage team dynamics, production processes, deadlines, and budgets effectively. The culmination of the course is the Major Production Project, where students produce a twelve to fifteen-minute film along with supporting materials. This project can be completed individually or collaboratively, allowing students to apply the skills, knowledge, and creative insights they have developed throughout the course while receiving ongoing guidance and feedback to ensure professional-standard outcomes.
