COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Film (Directing) course offers a comprehensive pathway for developing professional filmmaking skills through a combination of practical experience, theoretical study, and collaborative projects. The Industry module introduces students to work experience in their chosen field, supported by industry partners, and includes lectures on professionalism and workshops to help students develop reflective practices during their placements. Specialist Craft Practice and Advanced Specialist Craft Practice modules focus on building advanced technical and creative skills within the student’s chosen discipline, enabling the development of a portfolio that meets both academic and industry standards. The Film: Theory and Play module bridges theory and practice, allowing students to experiment with concepts and techniques in collaboration with peers from other pathways, fostering a deeper understanding of cinematic storytelling. Collaborative Practice teaches students essential skills for teamwork, production processes, hierarchy management, meeting deadlines, and budgeting, preparing them for real-world film set environments. The Major Production Project provides an opportunity to create a substantial body of work, either individually or as part of a team or industry-led project, with guidance and feedback from staff and industry mentors. Through this combination of modules, students gain the technical expertise, creative insight, and professional experience necessary to succeed in directing roles within film, television, and digital media.
