COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sports Coaching and Development program is a three-year degree designed to prepare students for careers in coaching, sports leadership, and community sport development. In the first year, students build a foundation in sports development, exercise prescription for non-referred populations, sport management, sport and exercise psychology, and introductory sports coaching, while developing academic research and professional skills. This provides both theoretical knowledge and practical awareness of the sports sector. The second year focuses on applied learning and professional experience, with modules in community sports development, sports coaching and leadership, physical education and school sport, research methods, adventurous activities and outdoor leadership, and a sport placement. These experiences allow students to apply theory to practice, gain hands-on experience, and develop essential skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through a dissertation, applied professional project, applied sports coaching, leadership in sport, creatively teaching physical education, and work-based learning. Critical issues in sports coaching and leadership are also explored, enabling students to understand contemporary challenges and develop strategic, evidence-based approaches. Graduates leave the program well-equipped for careers in sports coaching, performance development, school and community sport programs, leadership roles, and related areas, combining academic knowledge with practical expertise and professional competence.
