COURSE CURRICULUM

The Social Work program is a three-year degree designed to prepare students for professional practice, combining academic study with practical experience to develop qualified, competent, and compassionate social workers. In the first year, students build a foundation in reflective and applied practice, exploring the Social Care Wales Code of Practice, law and social policy, communication skills, social science theories, and introductory assessment methods. Emphasis is placed on developing critical thinking, ethical awareness, and the ability to engage effectively with diverse individuals and communities. In the second year, students expand their skills through outcome-focused practice, critically reflective applied practice, research skills, and the application of legislation and social policy, including the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014. This year enhances students’ ability to assess needs, manage risks, and integrate evidence-based approaches into practice. The third year focuses on complex, real-world social work scenarios, enabling students to apply theory to practice with individuals, families, and communities while promoting empowerment, independence, and social justice. Students also consolidate professional competence, develop emotional resilience, and learn inter-professional collaboration, accountability, and co-production skills. Throughout the program, research and enquiry inform practice, equipping graduates with the knowledge, practical expertise, and ethical understanding required to work effectively in diverse social care and community settings, ready for registration as qualified social workers.
